Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus I.Secreta takes part in the meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development on Chernobyl issues and the ceremony of laying flowers

On April 24, 2025 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Igor Secreta, as a member of the Council for Sustainable Development under the aegis of the National SDG Coordinator, the Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Khomenko, together with representatives of the diplomatic corps in the Republic of Belarus and a number of governmental bodies, laid flowers at the memorial signs in memory of the victims of Chernobyl and Hiroshima on the occasion of the forthcoming International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day on 26 April.

For reference: the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day was established by the UN General Assembly and included in the international calendar of commemorative dates since 2016 at the initiative of Belarus in accordance with the UNGA Resolution 71/125 ‘Long-term consequences of the Chernobyl disaster’. The main message of the resolution is the need to continue cooperation on the Chernobyl agenda under the auspices of the UN in order to achieve sustainable development of the affected regions and population through partnerships, innovations and investments.

The meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development headed by S.Khomenko, which took place on the same day at the Centre for Life Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus, was also dedicated to this memorable date.

During the meeting of the Council the issues of restoration and development of the Chernobyl-affected regions, international cooperation in the interests of achieving sustainable development were discussed.

The measures taken by the government to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe and to support the vital activity of the population in the affected territories were also reviewed.

The participants recognised that over a 39-year period Belarus has evolved from a country-recipient of humanitarian aid to a full-fledged partner and country-expert with experience in overcoming the consequences of a large-scale technogenic catastrophe.
